Wishing all you friends a great 2011. The 1^st month of 2011 is almost over and it has been quite eventful. 2 big cultural events took place very near to each other this month and almost overlapping each other, India Art Summit in Delhi and Jaipur Literature Festival in Jaipur. I couldn’t visit the latter but spent 2 quality days at Art Summit.

From the look of it, India Art Summit was big this time. The preview was full of glamour and booze. It seems all of Delhi’s swish set was in full attendance dressed in their impeccable blacks. Artists looked misfits barring a few. But this crowd was welcome, as they came to celebrate those very misfits. I had company of my very good friends, Awdhesh Mishra(Artist, Editor of KalaDirgha from Lucknow) and Dr. Rajesh Vyas (Critic, Writer and Columnist from Jaipur) and Smita Biswas (Artist, Curator & my wife) and together we really enjoyed the show. We praised, cribbed, laughed, criticized, and saw through everything on display. I also met with my dear friend and gallery owner from Chennai, Mayur Shah on last day of the summit and we gorged on some typical Delhi food at Bengali Market other than discussing works at the summit. This summit is turning out to be an annual get together of friends from all cities and I love this aspect.

It was good to see the likes of Picasso & Salvador Dali displayed at an Indian show. Majority of the works displayed in summit were in the new media, sculptures and installations. Some of the works were beyond any definition. We confused one display in Sculpture Park as garbage dump and then realized it was a display. I am calling it a display as I don’t know where to categorize it. Rajesh & Awdhesh also parked their empty coffee cups in the dump. I would leave the criticism to critics but this show was astonishing in terms of selection of works to display. Some of it was bizarre.

The quartet also visited the Anish Kappor’s show at NGMA. Couldn’t shoot anything there as the photography was prohibited, but by Indian standards the show was organized well and also it was good to see the interest among commoners about the show. The hall was full of security men & women trying to stop people from touching the sculptures as all of them were quite inviting to touch. The audio visual was also very interesting which showed the process of making those huge works. The visit to NGMA became more memorable because of an old friend and Art Conservator at National Museum, Mamta Bhatt. She took on herself to guide us through National Museum and NGMA.

To conclude, the visit was very fulfilling. Meeting with friends, singing sessions, long discussions, eating together, what else one can wish? Wonderful 3 days I must say.

India Art Summit' 09, New Delhi

The 2009 edition of India Art Summit was definitely better than last year. It was very business driven. The fraternity, at least the gallerists, collectors & investors came together. Discussions, presentations, paper readings and more. It was a good experience. I personally had some good meetings, was part of some good discussions, made new friends and got together with my Delhi based friends. Oh, and there was heavy rain on the 2nd day of the summit and Pragati Maidan was flooded, literally so as we walked in water well above the ankle.

Art Hong Kong was a mixed experience. There was a huge presence of European galleries. Whereas South Asian participation was minimal. Only two galleries from India, one from Pakistan and that’s about it. Chinese galleries had a bias towards Chinese art & artists and only that. They didn’t want to look beyond. In clarity it was realization of art the business. But even then a collection of more than hundred galleries was surely a treat. Had some very fruitful talks & meetings & found some good friends. Overall a very rewarding experience.

At times it's like coming out of a safe shelter. Various feelings can come through. This is a cottage in MTDC, Karla (Very near to Lonavla). A good place to be in the rains. In summers its very hot there. It’s a huge campus and there are other more expansive cottages also available. In fact this is the cheapest one but even after staying there in a more expansive one bedroom set they provide I felt this cottage provided more feel of the holiday or that relaxed weekend. The place is good and your mobile wouldn’t work there. That’s a good thing, or is it? It’s a summer afternoon in this landscape. Any thoughts? What say?

I sketched this idea while watching a bore play at Rangsharda auditorium. I was almost driven nuts by the very average story & treatment and on top of that I was supposed to drive home to belapur after the torture and I was really bothered. After half time I cut myself of to my sketchbook. And then almost spontaneously I sketched the base version of this painting. What do you see? Is it frustration or the feeling of being cramped? Now you also know the point of origin so again you have to name the painting. And tell me what your take is.

The Other Side of Palm Beach Road > Watercolor on paper, 22 X 15inches

This place is on the left side of Palm Beach Road, going towards Vashi. This place also attracts a lot of migratory birds in the rains. Though I have taken a small frame, because the boat was interesting, the area is vast and filled with mangroves. Good place to park your car and take a deep breath of fresh air. A lot of people running away from concrete surroundings, stop here to feel the openness.

This painting was done in the first live show 'A Dialogue with Poetry' we did at Oxford Bookstore. All the seats were full. It was good to see so many people interested to experience a new idea. The painting was done within one hour and unlike the other painting I have kept it as it was then. I haven’t done any changes in this painting. In the other painting, I did some changes later.

This watercolour was done near Maldah district of West Bengal. This house in a village belonged to a farmer. There were quite a few blank red posters on the wall and the doors. When I asked them about it, I was told that this is done to book that space for communist party posters, no one else dares to paste anything over these.

Not too many people liked this painting when I did it, But I was quite confident of the way I used colour and shapes in this work. Problem is that we tend to do complex things to impress people whereas simple images can move people.
I gifted this painting to Sonu Nigam on his birthday this year (30th July). BTW Me and Sonu share the same birhthday and yes the same year too.

Long back I did this watercolour in Balurghat. A small town near Bangladesh border, which also happens to be my mamabari. One day I sneaked in there to search for the chess pieces, which were hidden there to keep them away from me. And I was amazed with the light coming through the broken roof.

This painting was done live on stage at Kala Ghoda Festival, where I performed with Caferati group. I was on canvas, Jitendra on violin, Ivin on piano. The concept, direction and production was done by Vivin. It was a collaboration between Caferati and Theatre Watch, which I am a part of.
